The Growing Threat of Cargo Theft and Fraud in Logistics

· By Ernie Gunaseelan

The logistics sector confronts escalating cargo theft and fraud challenges. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, “Cargo Theft is a $15 billion to $35 billion industry.”

A TT Club report identifies criminal fraud as the primary growing threat to global supply chains, with carrier fraud dominating. “Carrier fraud accounted for 84% of claims involving fraud or deception in 2022,” the report noted.

Theft incidents continue climbing. CargoNet documented nearly 1,800 theft claims in 2022, representing a 15% increase from 2021. Thieves increasingly employ fraudulent identities and strategic methods to book and steal loads.

Prevention Strategies

  1. Employee awareness and training about fraud risks
  2. Thorough carrier vetting before load assignment
  3. Secure communication channels for sensitive information
  4. Physical security devices like kingpin locks
  5. Technology-driven risk assessment analyzing freight patterns and high-risk zones
